Manufacturing down 3.2% in June
Manufacturing production decreased by 3.2% year-on-year in June, Statistics South Africa revealed on Thursday.
The largest negative contributions were made by the petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products sector, with a decrease of 7.7% and contributing -1.7 percentage points; and the basic iron and steel, nonferrous metal products, metal products and machinery sector, with a 5.1% decrease and contributing -1 percentage point.
The wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing sector also contributed, with a decrease of 4.9% and contributing -0.5 of a percentage point.
The largest positive contribution was made by the food and beverages division, increasing 3.7% and contributing 1 percentage point.
Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production decreased by 1.5% in June compared with May. This followed month-on-month changes of -1.9% in May and 2.4% in April.
Seasonally adjusted manufacturing production increased by 0.6% in the second quarter of this year, compared with the first quarter. Four of the ten manufacturing divisions reported positive growth rates over this period.
The largest positive contributions were made by the food and beverages sector, with an increase of 1.6% and contributing 0.4 of a percentage point; basic iron and steel, nonferrous metal products, metal products and machinery, with a 1.3% increase and contributing 0.2 of a percentage point; and motor vehicles, parts and accessories and other transport equipment, with an increase of 3.4% and contributing 0.3 of a percentage point.
The largest negative contribution was made by the petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products sector, with a decrease of 1.3% and contributing -0.3 of a percentage point.
