PERTH (miningweekly.com) – South Africa-focused Universal Coal has reported a maiden Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant coal reserve of 9.4-million tonnes at its Roodekop project.

The reserve estimate relates to the northern openpit area only.

“The declaration of a maiden reserve is an important milestone in the integration of Roodekop with the New Clydesdale colliery and the first step in our short-term goal of establishing a reserve base large enough to sustain a minimum 15-year life-of-mine for the combined New Clydesdale colliery-Roodekop operation,” said Universal CEO Tony Weber.

The Roodekop project, which is 74% held by Universal, has a coal resource of 84.36-million tonnes, of which 82.9-million tonnes were classified as measured.

Universal was currently reviewing a feasibility study for the project, and was aiming to start production this year.

The company last month announced the acquisition of the New Clydesdale colliery from South Africa's Exxaro Resources, which placed the mine on care and maintenance in December. New Clydesdale is one of the oldest mines in the country.
