PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mineral sands producer Lynas reported a near three-fold increase in production from its Lynas Advanced Material Plant (Lamp) operation, in Malaysia, during the three months to December.

The ASX-listed company reported this week that total ‘ready for sale’ production during the quarter reached 741 t, on a rare-earth oxide equivalent basis, compared with the 253 t produced during the preceding three months.

An additional 35 t of production was currently awaiting classification as ‘ready for sale’ production.

Some 409 t of rare-earth product was shipped during the three months to customers during the quarter, which was 87% more than the previous quarter. In addition, Lynas noted that most of the cerium and lanthanum borrowed in 2012 for the pre-seeding of Lamp was produced and returned by the end of the quarter.

During the month of December, some 354 t of rare-earth oxide equivalent production was classified as ‘ready for sale’, with some 270 t of rare-earth oxide equivalent sold to customers.

Meanwhile, the company has also received the relevant administrative approvals for Phase 2 of Lamp, allowing the assets to be operated. Some of the Phase 2 downstream assets, such as the product finishing units and tunnel furnaces, were now being used to optimise customers’ product range.

However, the company noted that a decision to use the additional capacity of 11 000 t/y would be determined by various factors, including market conditions.

The Phase 2 assets would take Lamp’s total production to 22 000 t/y.
