PERTH (miningweekly.com) - ASX-listed Lynas is nearing commercial rare-earth production after successfully commissioning the cracking and leaching extraction units at its Lynas advanced materials plant (Lamp), in Malaysia.

The miner said on Monday that the commissioning involved the cracking of concentrate through the kilns, followed by the leaching circuit to produce a mixed rare earths sulphate.

This process has achieved recovery rates of more than 90% of contained rare-earth oxides through the cracking units.

“This is another significant milestone for Lynas,” said executive chairperson Nicholas Curtis in a statement.

“The safe and efficient operation of the Lamp is now a reality, and we are providing real-time data that assures people the Lamp is entirely safe for our local communities and the environment. We are excited to start creating value at the Lamp, and we look forward to sharing that value with all our key stakeholders, including the communities in which we operate.”

During December last year, the Malaysian Court of Appeals dismissed a court challenge by environmental group Save Malaysia Stop Lynas, against the grant of a temporary operating licence for the Lamp.

It was expected that a judicial review application would be heard by the Kuantan High Court during February this year, with both the company and the Malaysian government defending the process undertaken in the grant of the temporary operating licence.

Lynas said on Monday that following the successful commissioning of the cracking and leaching units, the company was now producing sufficient qualities of solids residue to start the production of synthetic gypsum and aggregate co-products.

This would provide co-product samples for testing and market trials that were a necessary precursor for commercial offtake contracts.
