Name and Location
Lusaka transmission and distribution rehabilitation project, Zambia.

Client
Zambia Electricity Supply Commission (Zesco).

Project Description
Lusaka’s electricity demand has grown at 6% a year over the past ten years, with demand now outstripping the installed capacity of the power system supplying the city. The project will increase the capacity and improve the reliability of Lusaka’s electricity transmission and distribution system for the community, as well as ensure the long-term sustainable operation of the network.

The first phase will result in the rehabilitation of the 132 kV and 88 kV transmission network in the Lusaka area, which will include the upgrading of four transmission lines, constructing three new substations and replacing 11 kV switchgear in various locations.

The second phase will entail the rehabilitation of the 33 kV and 11 kV distribution network in the same area and will include constructing three new substations and upgrading existing substations.

The third phase will include technical assistance and project supervision.

Value
The project is funded by the World Bank and will cost an estimated $200-million to implement.

Phase 1 will cost $106-million, Phase 2 $94-million and Phase 3 $10-million.

Duration
The project is expected to be completed in 2019.
