Name and Location
Lukala cement plant upgrade project, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Client
Cimenteries De Lukala (CILU), a subsidiary of HeidelbergCement.

Project Description
The upgrade involves replacing the existing systems with a new five-stage preheater kiln with a precalciner; lime-stone crushers, increasing clinker grinding capacity; installing a new bagging and dispatch facility with rotary packers; as well as a new staging area for vehicles dispatching cement; and rearranging certain site components. This will result in clinker capacity increasing from 330 000 t/y to 580 000 t/y and cement capacity from 450 000 t/y to 750 000 t/y.

The plant upgrade is expected to improve plant reliability, energy efficiency, point source emissions, and site administration and management to ensure alignment with the HeidelbergCement standards as applied internationally.

Value
The project will cost an estimated $80-million to implement.

Duration
Construction is expected to start in the second half of 2015, with commissioning expected in the second half of 2017.
