Project Description
Umgeni Water aims to extend its bulk water infrastructure system along the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast area to meet the ever-increasing water demands of this area.
The project encompasses the provision of infrastructure to abstract, treat and distribute raw water from the
Thukela river to the existing network to provide water for various surrounding district and local municipalities.
Principal structures to be constructed include reinforced-concrete water retaining structures, a high-lift pumpstation, continuously welded steel pipelines, a high-density polyethylene interconnecting pipework and sludge return pipelines, service water and sewerage reticulation systems, stormwater pipes and canals.
A gatehouse, an administration building, a chemical dosing building, a chlorination building and a centrifuge building will also be built.

R1.4-billion.
Duration
The preferred bidder for the construction of the treatment plant will be announced in June this year, with construction to start a month later.
The project is expected to be completed in November 2015, when the LTBWSS will also reach operational stage.
Latest Developments
Umgeni Water has called on competent contractors to tender for the construction of the 55-million-litre-a-day LTBWSS.
Interested parties have until May 9 to submit their bids.
