A shipwreck off the South African coast led to gold and diamond activities for young Swede, whose story is recounted in a book just published by Africana Publishers of Cape Town.

Eighteen Years in South Africa, written by EJ Kärrström, tells of the Swede’s quandary when his dream to see the world as a sailor ended with a boat’s destruction off the shore of East London in 1877.

Soon thereafter, he found himself fighting in the Ninth Frontier War, the Zulu War of 1879 and the Basuto Gun War, before making his fortune mining gold in Barberton and digging for diamonds in Kimberley.
