Name and Location
Lom Pangar hydroelectric project (LPHP), Cameroon.

Client
The government of Cameroon.

Project Description
The proposed LPHP involves the construction of a reservoir dam in Cameroon’s East Province, 4 km from the confluence of the Lom and Pangar rivers, on the Sanaga river basin.

The 45-m-high dam will create a reservoir, covering an estimated area of 610 km2.

The dam will constitute the fourth hydropower installation on the Sanaga basin, designed to regulate the river’s flow to increase energy outputs from downstream dams.

The government of Cameroon claims that the project, which will flood village settlements, farm and grazing land, portions of the Deng Deng hardwood forest reserve and biodiversity hotspots, as well as sections of the Chad–Cameroon oil pipeline, is necessary to deal with the country’s energy shortage.

The project also includes a 30 MW power plant, which will replace expensive thermal generation.

Value
About $494-million, with $132-million being financed by the International Development Association, $163-million by the African Development Bank, the Central African States Development Bank, the European Investment Bank and the French Agency for Development, and $199-million by the Cameroon government.

Duration
The dam is expected to take 38 months to build.

Latest Developments
China International Water & Electric Corporation was awarded a contract last May to build the dam.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
