Machine tool dealer Harp Machine Tools will use Electra Mining Africa 2014 as a platform to launch its new range of computer-numerically controlled (CNC) machines from Canadian manufacturer SMTCL.

Boksburg, Gauteng-based Harp Machine Tools will introduce the Brio Miller 8, an affordable vertical machining centre with 850 mm travel on the X axis, at the exhibition. The company will also put on show a model CAK CNC flat-bed lathe and a CNC vertical machining centre 1 100 mm.

SMTCL management will be at the Harp Machine Tool stand in Hall 9 to answer any questions regarding its machinery, says Harp Machine Tools MD Seamus Thompson.

The Brio Miller 8 vertical machining centre is used for complex applications requiring high precision, such as plates, discs, shells and moulds. The machine performs a series of processes including milling, drilling, tapping, boring, reaming and contouring.

The main components of the Brio Miller 8, including the bed, table, slide carriage, column and spindle box, are made of high-strength resin bonded sand casting. All structural components are optimised to improve rigidity and stability.

Thompson says the machine’s guide way pairs use roller-type linear guide rails, which have the advantages of minimum friction, high sensitivity, low vibration at high speed, no creep at low speed and high positioning accuracy, thereby improving the accuracy and stability of the machine. The servo motors are directly coupled to the high-precision ball screws through flexible couplings to achieve seamless transmission. This enhances feed flexibility, positioning accuracy and transmission precision. The Z axis servo motor with automatic brake function holds the motor shaft when power shuts down.

Harp Machine Tools will also have conventional machines on show, including a range of centre lathes from 360 mm × 1 000 mm up to 800 mm × 3 000 mm, a Z3050 × 16/1 radial drill and a TPX6111B/3 110mm spindle horizontal boring mill.

The company will also exhibit a Wuhu CNC vertical boring mill model: CK5116.

“Several of these machines are already in operation in South Africa and have proven to be of exceptional quality,” Thompson reports.

Harp Machine Tools was formed in March 1984 to supply the engineering and manufacturing industries with quality, affordable machine tools. “We have acquired a reputation for selling quality machine tools both nationally and internationally. It is this simple policy of quality that has built Harp Machine Tools into one of Africa’s largest and most reputable machine tool dealers,” he says.

The company sources and supplies machinery worldwide, and has served the engineering industries of Africa, the US, Europe and the UK for over 30 years.

“At Harp, we understand that downtime is money lost, and we endeavour to thoroughly check the machines before they leave the showroom,” Thompson says.

Harp Machine Tools provides a one-year warranty on its machines, and provides service backup. The company commissions each machine after it is delivered to the customer, and its teams of electrical and mechanical technicians are available to deal with service calls.
