Cleaning chemicals manufacturer Blendwell Chemicals is the first South African company to be awarded the international GreenTag certification for its Enviroblend range.

GreenTag, which is recognised by the Green Building Council of South Africa, is an international certifying body that claims the most comprehensive eco certification globally, underpinned by rigorous scientific and life-cycle assessment processes.

“International standards have driven the need for better locally manufactured products to meet green requirements globally,” says Blendwell Chemicals MD Judy Sunasky.

The company develops its own in-house formulations and uses local technology and raw materials, wherever possible, to develop its Enviroblend range. The range includes degreasing, floor and vehicle cleaning, as well as disinfecting and sanitising cleaning products. Initially introduced in 2010, the range has been updated continuously, enhancing its ecofriendly properties.

“It is an ongoing process as better raw materials become available to us in South Africa,” adds Sunasky.

She notes that there are many products on the market that still use core raw materials, such as nonylphenol ethoxylates, phosphates and formaldehyde, which are unacceptable in many other markets globally. “Africa does not yet have legislation in place that forbids the use of such raw materials and, as a result, these components are still used locally,” she highlights.

Blendwell’s new range of cleaning materials offers better cleaning properties at lower concentrations and breaks down quicker and easier in the environment. The range is also more effective at lower temperatures, which minimises power use and, thus, energy resources.

To produce the best possible cleaning chemical products for the environment, the company ensures that its products are readily biodegradable and manufactured under environmentally acceptable conditions. They are also nontoxic and require nonhazardous transportation.

Blendwell also offers full training with the supply of its chemicals and often asks clients what they might like covered in its training course. Educating clients on the green cleaning products available and helping them gain insight into the green industry is of great importance to Blendwell, adds Sunasky.

“Our entire range continues to move towards better, greener products wherever it is possible and acceptable to the market. It is an ongoing journey,” she concludes.
