Liquefied natural gas break bulk terminal project, the Netherlands
Name and Location
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) break bulk terminal project, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Client
Gate Terminal, a joint venture between Gasunie and Royal Vopak.
Project Description
The project involves the addition of LNG break bulk infrastructure and services to the Gate terminal, at the Port of Rotterdam.
The break bulk terminal allows for large-scale LNG shipments to be divided into smaller quantities to facilitate the distribution of LNG to be used as fuel for ships and heavy trucks. The terminal will be expanded with an additional harbour basin to enable LNG distribution for small-scale use with a maximum capacity of 280 berthing slots a year.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority is involved in the design and construction of a dedicated harbour basin for LNG break bulk operations and has introduced new regulations that allow for LNG bunkering for inland barges and ship-to-ship bunkering for seagoing vessels.
