Name and Location
Line 1 replacement project, Kenya.

Client
Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC).

Project Description
The Mombasa-Nairobi multiproduct pipeline (Line 1) was commissioned in 1978 and is about 449.1 km long.

The pipeline operates with eight pumpstations located along the pipeline and each pumpstation has two pumps rated at 440 m3/h.

The pipeline is operated by running either one pump set or two pump sets per station, depending on the demand for product.

The project aims to replace the existing Line 1 with a suitable pipeline size to meet the projected demand for petroleum products in Kenya and in the East Africa region up to year 2044.

The project will be financed through internally generated funds and external borrowing.

The loan limit has been set at between $400-million and $500-million.

Duration
Not stated.

Latest Developments
Zakhem International Construction has been awarded the contract for the Line 1 replacement project.

The company’s bid came in at $484.5-million.

Zakhem overcame stiff competition from seven shortlisted firms, scoring 95.5% in the technical and financial evaluations of the bids. However, the firm will have to wait for the conclusion of a court case disputing the manner in which KPC handled the award of the  tender, before the contract can be signed.
