PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold miner Newcrest Mining has temporarily suspended operations at its Lihir mine, in Papua New Guinea, following community unrest.

The Lihir plant was shut down for about 36 hours over the weekend, and operations resumed on Monday evening.

The company said on Tuesday that the Mineral Resource Authority had not authorised the disruptive actions, initiated by a small subset of community and local commercial interest, which meant that it was illegal.

Newcrest noted that although there would be some lost production as a result of the illegal incident, production guidance at Lihir for the full year would remain unchanged at between 680 000 oz and 720 000 oz.
