Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP), comprising KP&P Africa, Aldwych International, the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa, the Industrial Fund for Developing Countries and the Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries.

Project Description
Located on the south-eastern shore of Lake Turkana, in northern Kenya, the 310 MW wind farm will feature three hundred and sixty-five 850 kW wind turbine generators, each with a capacity of 850 kW.

The project also includes the upgrade of the existing road of about 204 km from Laisamis to the wind farm site and an access road network in and around the site for construction, operations and maintenance. Kenyan national grid company Ketraco is constructing a double-circuit 400 kV, 450 km transmission line connecting the outskirts of Nairobi to Loyangalani, near the project site. This will enable future electrification of nearby rural areas where previously there was no electricity available.

Latest Developments
Construction has begun on Africa’s largest wind power project.

Mott MacDonald has been appointed lenders’ technical adviser on the project.

The company is providing construction and operations monitoring for the wind farm and environment and social monitoring for the transmission line. Previously, the consultancy performed technical, environmental and social due diligence on behalf of the lenders during the project’s financing stage.
