PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Kupang Resources on Thursday reported that it was a step closer to manganese production in Indonesia after the Kupang joint venture (JV) obtained final approval for manganese lump production.

Kupang Resources, which owns a 55% stake in the project, told shareholders that it had obtained the final approval necessary to allow crushing, screening, blending and stockpiling of raw manganese ore at the Kupang processing site.

The JV processing plant is located on land leased for a period of 30 years, in an industrial complex near the deep-water Port of Tenau. The plant would stockpile, process and blend raw manganese, and upgrade it into a product suitable for sale on the global market to the ferro and silico manganese smelting industry.

The Kupang JV had signed a formal joint operation agreement for access to the port facilities to export its manganese. The JV’s ship-loading equipment could use the port facilities to export some 80 000 t/m of processed manganese oxide from the deep-water port.

The JV would use its own equipment to bulk load manganese onto vessels.

“With this final approval now in place, the Kupang JV is poised to ramp up activities towards the commencement of production in the coming months,” said head of operations Simon Youds.

“The operations of the Kupang JV will create cash flow to the company and at the same time, provide significant opportunities to the people of Kupang, which is very important to the company and its JV partners.”

With the final approval in place, the processing equipment could now be assembled at site, following the site preparation, which would be completed in the coming weeks.

Locally mined and stockpiled ore had also been purchased from the Manganese Society of Kupang, with the Society endeavouring to supply a minimum of 30 000 t/m of raw, high-grade ore to the JV.
