State-owned power utility Eskom on Tuesday marked a milestone for Koeberg power station’s Unit 1 nuclear reactor, which achieved 455 days of continuous operation, surpassing the 2001 record of 454 days.

The unit was returned to service on June 2, 2015, after undergoing a maintenance and refuelling programme since February.

“Unit 1 has been running at full power since it was synchronised to the national electricity grid,” the utility said.

Further, both Unit 1 and Unit 2 have simultaneously been online for 261 continuous days of operation, surpassing the previous 2013 record of 184 days.
