Name and Location
Koeberg nuclear power station steam-generator replacement project, Western Cape, South Africa.

Client
Eskom.

Project Description
The current steam generators in Unit 1 and Unit 2 at the Koeberg nuclear power station have been in operation since 1983/4 and 1984/5 respectively; as a result, Eskom plans to replace them.

This will involve the design, manufacture and installation of three steam generators in each of the two operating units, as well as the safety analyses and studies required for the replacement of the six steam generators.

The new generators will incorporate modern design features for easy maintenance and inspections and improve heat-transfer efficiency, leading to the overall efficiency of the power station.

The installation of the generators will be conducted during scheduled refuelling, inspections and maintenance outages of the two units at the power station.

Value
Eskom has stated that the outcome of current “commercial process” will determine the total cost of the project.

Duration
Eskom plans to replace the six steam generators at Koeberg during outages in 2016 and 2017.

Latest Developments
A consortium comprising two South African companies, Group Five, through Group Five Nuclear Construction Services, and Lesedi Nuclear Services, has secured a contract for the design, manufacture and replacement of the 1 800 m³ refuelling water storage tanks at Eskom’s Koeberg nuclear power station.

The value of the contract has not been disclosed.

The tanks play a vital role in maintaining the operational safety of the nuclear power plant by providing borated cooling water for the reactor and the fuel storage ponds. This requires conformance to stringent nuclear quality and safety standards throughout the full life cycle of the project.

As part of the skills development portion of the contract, the consortium has committed to train 45 people across various occupational groups for the duration of the contract, which is scheduled for completion at the end of 2015.

This training process woill include professional engineers, project managers, specialists, technicians and artisans.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Group Five and Lesedi Nuclear Services (design, manufacture and replacement of refuelling water storage tanks).
