Location
About 50 km south of Nairobi, in Kajiado County, Kenya.
Project Owner/s
Kipeto Energy (KEP), comprising renewable-energy companies Actis-backed BioTherm Energy (BTE) and Kenya-based Craftskills.
Project Description
Kipeto is Kenya’s second-biggest wind power project.
The wind farm comprises 60 wind turbine generators producing 102 MW.
It is expected that the project will generate 9 000 GWh of clean energy over its 20-year operational lifetime, the equivalent of removing 2.7-million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere.
Potential Job Creation
More than 800 jobs were created during the construction phase of the project and an additional 60 permanent jobs are expected during the operational phase.
About 200 families are expected to benefit directly from the turbines being located on their land, with the company having established a community trust to oversee further distribution of profits to the wider local area.
Capital Expenditure
$300-million.
The project is funded by equity from BTE and Craftskills, alongside senior debt from development finance institution the US International Development Finance Corporation and the African Trade Insurance Agency.
Planned Start/End Date
Construction was completed in July 2021.
Latest Developments
KEP has completed construction of the Kipeto Wind Farm.
The project’s 60 wind turbines are producing power for the national grid.
The Kipeto project has a 20-year power purchase agreement with the Kenyan utility Kenya Power and Lighting Company in place.
