Client
Kipeto Energy Limited (KEL), a special- purpose vehicle incorporated for the implementation of the project.
African Infrastructure Investment Fund 2, a fund managed and advised by African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM), is the lead developer of the project with a 55% share, and Craftskills Wind Energy International, a local developer, has a 20% shareholding. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has invested in the project through IFC InfraVentures to support the development phase of the project and will assume a 20% shareholding in KEL, with the remaining 5% to be awarded to the Kipeto local community trust in the form of revenue or profit share.
Project Description
The project entails the development, construction and operation of a 100 MW wind farm, located at Kipeto, about 70 km south-west of Nairobi, in Kenya’s Rift Valley province. The project will comprise a turbine corridor of 60 wind turbine generators, each with a capacity of 1.7 MW, within a 70 km2 area. The turbines will have a hub height of 80 m, a blade length of 51.5 m, a rotor diameter of 103 m and an overall height not exceeding 131.5 m.
The project will include internal access roads to all turbines, a substation, underground cabling between the turbines and to the substation, and a 17 km 220 kV transmission line to the main Nairobi Namanga road within a 60 m wayleave.
