President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday expressed his deepest sympathy on the passing of Isilo Samabandla King Goodwill Zwelithini Ka Bhekuzulu, saying he will be remembered for his contribution to economic development.

Zwelithini, 72, passed away in hospital on Friday after not been well in the past few weeks.

“This sad news comes at a time when we had all been hopeful that His Majesty was recovering well in hospital where he had been over the past few week,” Ramaphosa said.

He explained that His Majesty will be remembered as a much loved, visionary monarch who made an important contribution to cultural identity, national unity and economic development in KwaZulu-Natal and through this, to the development of the country as a whole.

The President offered his sympathies and prayers to the Royal family, the Zulu nation and the people of KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.
