PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Kimberley Diamonds has suspended work at the E9 pit at its Ellendale mine site, in Western Australia, amid safety fears.

The miner said on Thursday that following a routine blast in the E9 openpit, some slippage of the pit wall occurred beneath the main access ramp, which has temporarily rendered the ramp unsafe for use.

No personnel were in the mine at the time of the blast and no equipment was damaged.

Kimberley told shareholders that it had sufficient surface ore stockpiles to ensure that the treatment plant operations could continue for at least two months on high-grade ore. In addition to the ore stockpile, the mine also had lower-grade stockpiles that would last for a further 12 months.

As a result, the interruption would have a minimal impact on estimated production, and would not have any negative impact on the company’s financial results, Kimberley said.

The E9 operation is estimated to contain some 14.7-million tonnes of ore, grading 5.27 ct/t, for 776 200 carats.
