Kigali water project, Rwanda
Name and Location
Kigali water project, Rwanda.
Client
Kigali Water Limited (KWL), a joint venture between Metito Utilities and Metito Overseas. The Rwanda government awarded the project to KWL in October 2014.
Project Description
The project comprises the development, design, financing
, construction, operation and maintenance of a bulk water production facility with a capacity of 40 000 m3/d.
Included in the project is a well field, a water treatment plant, three pumping stations, pipelines and three storage reservoirs.
The well field starts east of the existing Kanzenze bridge and is expected to continue 2 km along the South bank of the river.
For the abstraction of raw water from the Nyabarongo river, 32 new wells will be built and installed.
The wells will be the sole source of raw water for the project.
Of the 32 wells to be developed, six wells will be continuously on standby to ensure that the water quantity requirements under the 27-year public–private partnership (PPP) agreement are met. Well testing has indicated that the yield for all the existing wells averages between 60 m3/h to 66 m3/h.
The water treatment plant (WTP) will have a production capacity of 40 000 m3/d.
The WTP will be located about 1 km south of the well field.
This has been done to elevate the WTP works out of the floodplain to reduce the likelihood of flooding.
The Kanzenze well field located at an altitude of about 1 340 m.
To supply water northwards into the new Gahanga/Nyanza and Kagarama reservoirs at an elevation of 1 600 m and southwards to the Bugesera reservoir at 1 526 m, significant pumping and forwarding infrastructure will be required.
This includes three pumping stations, about 14.5 km of pipelines and three new reservoirs.
KWL will also design and build new water reservoirs – two tanks at Bugasera, two tanks at Gahanga and three tanks at Kagarama.
Telemetry outstations, to operate the Kigali Water project and to transmit selected key signals to the Water and Sanitation Corporation’s central control and monitoring station, will also be provided for at the project site.
