Project Description
The project involves the world-first conversion of a disused old gold mine into a 250 MW pumped-storage hydroelectric power generation facility.
The power station will convert two of the existing mine pits into reservoirs, with water running from the upper to the lower pit through two turbines at times of peak power demand and pumped back during low demand to restart the cycle.
The project includes the construction of significant underground infrastructure, comprising a large powerhouse cavern and waterway shafts, as well as tunnels to allow for the transfer of water between the upper and lower reservoirs.
