JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Mineral explorer and developer Kibo Mining is hoping to conclude a joint venture (JV) with its Korean strategic partner for its Rukwa coal-to-power project, in Tanzania, in the near future, CEO Louis Coetzer said on Thursday.

The company recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with East-West Power (EWP), which provides for the general terms of the partnership, including terms on the scope of cooperation, sharing of information and confidentiality.

Coetzer said Kibo would host EWP on a site visit to Rukwa at the beginning of August and that it hoped to finalise the JV shortly thereafter.

“We are extremely pleased to progress Kibo’s relationship with EWP. This is the result of positive talks with the company in Korea at the end of June and is a further endorsement of the Rukwa coal-to-power project, following its inclusion in the Tanzanian government’s National Energy Strategy,” he said.

Kibo and EWP are looking to jointly develop a 300 MW to 350 MW mouth-of-mine thermal coal plant at the Rukwa deposit in southern Tanzania.
