Location
The Kibali gold mine is located in the Haute Uele province located in the north-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Project Owner/s
Kibali Gold Mines, which comprises Barrick Gold (45%), AngloGold Ashanti (45%) and DRC State-owned mining company Société des Mines d’Or de Kilo-Moto (10%).
Barrick Gold operates the mine.
Project Description
Kibali ranks as one of the largest gold mines in Africa.
The mine comprises the Kibali Karagba-Chauffeur-Durba (KCD)
underground mine; and the KCD openpit and satellite deposits, which include Sessenge, Sessenge SW, Pakaka, Pamao, Gorumbwa, Mengu Hill, Mengu Village, Megi, Marakeke and Kombokolo.
The mine includes a 7.2-million-tonne-a-year processing plant that produces gold doré bars, three hydropower stations, and other associated mine operational and regional exploration infrastructure.
The operation has been designed for automated mining. The system is operational on the underground haulage level and is being expanded to the upper working levels of the mine making it a global leader in this field.
The project had proven reserves of 20-million tonnes grading 4.1 g/t gold and probable reserves of 42-million tonnes grading 4.1 g/t gold as at December 31, 2018.
The Kibali openpit operations will continue until 2026 and the underground mine until 2036.

Kibali has a staff complement of about 5 000, 95% of whom are Congolese nationals.

Capital Expenditure
The project entailed an investment of more than $2.5-billion by the project partners.
Planned Start/End Date
First gold was poured in September 2013 and production ramped up to full production in 2018.
Latest Developments
Kibali remains on track to meet or beat its production guidance of 750 000 oz for 2019.
Also, brownfield exploration has confirmed the potential to replace depletion and maintain the ongoing ten-year plan.
