Kevin's Corner gets govt approval
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Environment Minister Greg Hunt has granted approval for the development of the $4.2-billion Kevin’s Corner coal project, in Queensland.
The project, being developed by Indian conglomerate GVK, would produce an estimated 30-million tonnes of thermal coal a year, over a 30-year life-of-mine. The underground and opencut operation would be located 65 km north-west of the proposed Alpha coal mine, which Hancock and the GVK are developing.
“This approval comes as a major milestone towards our goal of becoming the premier and most reliable coal supplier to the world, thus enabling better lives,” said GVK Power & Infrastructure founding chairperson and MD GVK Reddy.
Vice chairperson Sanjay Reddy noted that the overall environmental assessment process had resulted in best practice.
“As coal developers, we are uniquely placed, as we possess the federal and state government approvals that integrate our mine, rail and port projects that will definitely help in the opening up of the Galilee basin.
“Our projects represent one of the most significant pieces of regional and economic development this state has seen for decades,” said Reddy.
The Queensland Resources Council’s acting CEO Greg Lane said on Friday that the project was expected to not only improve the living standards for environmental protection outcomes, but to send a positive signal for future investment and job creation.
Construction of Kevin’s Corner was reportedly expected to start in 2015, with first coal to be produced by 2018.
