Kestrel mine extension project, Australia
Name and Location
Kestrel mine extension project, Queensland, Australia.
Client
Rio Tinto Coal Australia.
Project Description
The Kestrel mine extension project includes two declines each longer than 1.5 km long to access the new production area; a new 400 m longwall; and infrastructure such as an 8.9 km overland conveyor and upgrades to the existing coal handling and preparation plant. This will allow for a new series of underground panels to be mined to the south of the existing operation.
The extension will add 20 years to the life of the Kestrel mine and increase production of hard coking coal to about six-million tonnes a year.
The mine has about 115-million tonnes in coal reserves, providing options for ongoing mining.
Value
$2-billion.
Duration
Construction of the Kestrel mine extension started in August 2008 and was fully completed in September 2013.
The new operation (Kestrel South) is expected to reach full capacity by the end of 2014 as the existing mine (Kestrel North) ramps down.
Latest Developments
The Kestrel mine was officially opened on October 15 in an on-site ceremony near Emerald, in central Queensland.
Rio Tinto manages the Kestrel mine on behalf of the joint venture partners Queensland Coal and Mitsui Kestrel Coal Investment.
