Kenya-based Kipeto Energy has completed construction of the 100 MW Kipeto wind farm, in the Kajiado county, in Kenya.

The project’s 60 wind turbines are producing power for the national grid.

Renewable energy companies BTE Renewables and Craftskills, which created the Kipeto company for the project, says it is a proud day for the project to enter commercial operation after 12 years of development.

Kipeto is Actis-backed BTE’s fifth project to reach commercial operations in the last year. The company now has 384 MW of wind and solar plants in Kenya and South Africa.

The Kipeto project has a 20-year power purchase agreement with the Kenyan utility KPLC in place.

The project was predominantly funded by equity from BTE, while Kenya-based Craftskills provided 12% of the required funding, alongside senior debt from the US International Development Finance Corporation and the African Trade Insurance Agency.
