Name of the Project
Karusa and Soetwater wind farms.

Location
The Karoo Hoogland district, in South Africa’s Northern Cape province.

Project Owner/s
Enel Green Power RSA (EGP RSA), a subsidiary of Enel Green Power (EGP).

Project Description
Karusa and Soetwater will each have a capacity of 140 MW.

Each farm is expected to generate more than 585 GWh/y, avoiding the emission of about 611 000 t/y of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

The wind farms will be supported by a 20-year power supply agreement with State-owned energy utility Eskom, in line with government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

Potential Job Creation
EGP RSA will employ local staff and hire local contractors during the construction process to promote meaningful socioeconomic and enterprise development.

Capital Expenditure
Karusa and Soetwater will involve an investment of more than €200-million each.

Planned Start/End Date
Construction of the projects started in November 2019, with both wind farms entering commercial operation in July 2022.

Latest Developments
EGP announced on July 21 that it had connected the 147 MW Soetwater Wind Farm to the national grid, as it had achieved commercial operation.

The wind farm features Vestas V136 4.2 MW wind turbines, the biggest on the African continent to date.

Soetwater brings the number of EGP South Africa wind farms in operation up to seven, and includes the 88 MW Nojoli, the 140 MW Oyster Bay, Nxuba, Garob farms and the 147 MW Karusa wind farm.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Vestas (wind turbines).
