Name and Location
Kaombo ultradeep offshore project, Angola.

Client
Total is the operator, with a 30% interest in Block 32. The other partners are Sonangol (20%), China Sonangol Petroleum (20%), ExxonMobil (15%), Marathon Oil (10%) and Galp Energia (5%).

Project Description
Kaombo, located about 260 km offshore of Luanda, in water depths ranging from 1 400 m to 1 900 m, will develop estimated reserves of 650-million barrels and have a production capacity of 230 000 bbl/d.

The project will include the development of six of the 12 discoveries made on Block 32. The six fields – Gengibre, Gindungo, Caril, Canela, Mostarda and Louro – cover 800 km2 in the central and south-east part of the block.

The Kaombo development scheme includes 59 subsea wells that are connected through an estimated 300 km of subsea lines to two floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels, each with a production capacity of 115 000 bbl/d.

The two FPSOs will be based on conversions of very large crude carriers into production units. Associated gas will be exported to the onshore Angola liquefied natural gas plant.

The Kaombo development includes a substantial level of local content, which will include more than 14-million work hours of fabrication and construction works at Angolan yards, which, in turn, will be used for equipment fabrication and assembly.

Value
Following an intensive optimisation exercise, the project’s capital expenditure to reach full capacity has been reduced by $4-billion to $16-billion.

Duration
Start-up is expected in 2017.

Latest Developments
Total and its joint venture partners made the final investment decision to develop the ultradeep offshore Kaombo project in April this year.

Meanwhile, a consortium, comprising Technip and Heerema Marine Contractors, has been awarded a major lump-sum contract by Total E&P Angola for the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and precommissioning for the subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines part of the Kaombo project. The contract is valued at about $3.5-billion.

The project’s scope of work consists of the engineering, procurement, fabrication, transport and installation of:
• 18 rigid risers, of the single top tension riser-type, including large buoyancy tanks about 40 m high and 6 m in diameter, flexible top riser jumpers and riser base spools;
• about 300 km of rigid pipe-in-pipe production and single pipe injection pipelines; and
• a large number of subsea structures, piles and steel jumpers.

The contract also covers the transport and installation of about 115 km of client-supplied umbilicals, manifolds, well jumpers and flying leads.
