Name and Location
Kandadji dam project, Niger.

Client
Niger Department of Planning, Regional Development and Community Development.

Project Description
The project involves the construction of a 1.6-billion-cubic-metre capacity dam in Kandadji, about 187 km upstream from the capital, Niamey. It includes the development of 1 700 ha of irrigated land, downstream from the dam, and the implementation of a resettlement scheme for people who will be displaced during the construction phase.

The project will have a capacity of 130 MW and will also provide irrigation.

An estimated 45 000 ha of farmland will be irrigated to ease dependence on rains, leaving millions hungry each year.

Forty-thousand people that will be affected by the dam will be relocated.

Value
The cost of the project is estimated at $1-billion.

Duration
The dam is expected to be completed in 2017.

Latest Developments
Niger has secured $83.51-million to relocate thousands of people from the proposed site of the proposed hydroelectric dam.

The donors – which include the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, the African Development Bank and the French Development Agency – will undertake the relocation of the people.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
None stated.

On Budget and on Time?
The project has been under way since 2008, but was work halted after a dispute with the original partner.

The construction of the dam had initially been awarded to Russia’s Zarubezhvodstroy OJSC, but the Niger government broke off the contract in July 2013, alleging that the firm had not met its commitments.
