Former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas assumed the position of chairperson of the MTN board on December 15, succeeding Phuthuma Nhleko, who has been with the telecommunications giant for many years.

Nhleko head up MTN as CEO during its major expansion years from 2002 until 2011, when he became chairperson of the board.

His resignation was announced in May this year. This week, MTN said that Nhleko had left the board, following an orderly transition, including the establishment of the International Advisory Board (IAB), which would provide counsel and support to the board.

The IAB is led by political and business heavyweights, including former South African President Thabo Mbeki and Nhleko.

Other directors who left the board on December 15, include Alan Harper, Jeff van Rooyen and Koosum Kaylan.

Khotso Mokhele assumed the responsibilities of lead independent director.
