Johnson Controls has recently announced the launch of its YORK YK-EP “Efficiency Plus” water-cooled centrifugal chiller which achieves five percent capacity and efficiency improvements over the previous model. The YK-EP “Efficiency Plus” chiller is ideal for large capacity applications including district cooling, large central plants and gas-turbine inlet-air cooling.

“Throughout our long association with Middle East and Africa, we have ensured energy and operational savings for our customers through products that are reliable and of superior quality. The York YK-EP centrifugal chiller is another example of our commitment to the introduction of industry leading technology for sustainable development in the region,” says Neil Cameron, Area General Manager Africa, Johnson Controls.

“The chillers utilise a patent-pending mechanical compression economiser cycle, which couples a primary compressor with an auxiliary economiser compressor to make it more efficient than single stage chillers,” says Vivek Apte, Regional Product Director, Chiller Solutions, Middle East and Africa, Johnson Controls. “While the chiller is able to operate with low entering condenser water temperature (ECWT) down to 12.7°C compared to 23.9°C for other chillers, trimming instantaneous energy consumption by as much as 50 percent – the chiller is also capable of operating efficiently with warm ECWT that prevails in this region, especially during summers,” Cameron added.

The YK-EP chillers have the most compact configuration in their class and a 15% smaller footprint than competing chillers, reducing the total cost of ownership and releasing premium space for commercial gains. YK-EP chillers use a YORK OptiSpeed variable speed drive, which can accept medium or high voltage power, saving electrical infrastructure costs and cutting down average annual energy consumption by up to 30%. The chillers are equipped with the YORK OptiView control panel for enhanced chiller control and building management system integration.

Current customers have selected the YK-EP for its ability to reach required capacity levels at real-world conditions and its ability to operate at low ECWT, which provides significant energy savings. Additionally, in facilities with multiple YK-EP chillers, additional energy savings can be accomplished with a series counter flow arrangement. This reduces the compressor work needed on each chiller, decreasing system energy use by as much as 8% at design conditions.

Cameron concludes, “The YK-EP chiller is ideal for the South African environment as organisations are continually looking for solutions that can assist with reducing energy consumption. A key benefit to organisations is the ecological chiller design and unparalleled display of innovation that will meet the needs of any large environment.”
