Jacobs allows Buru Energy to frack for gas
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Western Australian Environment Minister Albert Jacobs has upheld the Environmental Protection Authority’s (EPA’s) decision that ASX-listed Buru Energy be allowed to frack for gas, despite opposition from environmentalists.
In dismissing the appeals against the EPA decision, Jacobs said that the authority had concluded that the small-scale Buru operation was unlikely to have a significant effect on the environment.
In January, the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) called on the Minister to place a temporary ban on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, after the EPA decided not to assess Buru’s Laurel formation tight gas exploration programme.
In its assessment, the EPA said that while the Laurel proposal raised a number of environmental issues, the EPA had decided not to pursue the matter.
Jacobs pointed out that the Buru proposal would be further evaluated, regulated and mitigated by the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) and the Department of Water to meet the EPA’s objectives for the environmental factors identified for the proposal.
Buru stated on Tuesday that it was awaiting the outcome of the assessment of the environment and operational plans for the exploration programme currently being undertaken by the DMP.
The company said it had also undertaken extensive community engagement programmes, which would be ongoing.
The plan was to undertake 32 fracking treatments in four existing vertical exploration wells about 90 km from Broome, and two in an area some 320 km from Broome.
Subject to the results, future drilling and fracking of horizontal wells could occur, as part of an appraisal process.
