Iron Road's port gets top priority
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The South Australian government has given junior developer Iron Road’s infrastructure component of its Central Eyre project major development status.
The state’s Minister for Planning, John Rau, this week awarded the major development status to the multibillion-dollar deep sea port planned at Cape Hardy. The port and associated infrastructure, which includes a 150 km rail line, would service significant iron-ore deposits on the Eyre Peninsula.
“The major development process allows a wide and in-depth consideration of the implications of the proposals, including public consultation,” said Rau.
“It is the most extensive development assessment process in South Australia and is recognsied by the Commonwealth under its environmental protection and biodiversity conservation law.”
Iron Road MD Andrew Stocks on Friday welcomed the state government’s declaration, saying that as the biggest active resource development in the state, the company was looking forward to continuing to worth with the regional authorities and communities.
Iron Road was working to create an integrated iron-ore export operation on the Eyre Peninsula, exporting some 20-million tonnes a year of high-grade iron concentrates.
The port was expected to have a 30-million tonne a year export capacity, with capacity of 10-million tonnes a year available for third-part users.
The ASX-listed company would now prepare its development application, which would be submitted to the Development Assessment Commission, which would determine the assessment level for the project.
Mining operations would not be included in the scope of the declaration, but would be applied for separately.
Iron Road was currently completing its definitive feasibility study for the Central Eyre iron project, with completion expected by the end of the year. The company was also moving forward with financing and partnership discussions.
