Name and Location
Iqaluit International Airport improvement project, Nunavut, Canada.

Client
Government of Nunavut.

Project Description
The project will increase the capacity of the Iqaluit International Airport and involves the design and construction of:
• a new 10 000 m2 air terminal building;
• a new 4 500 m2 combined services building, including a fire hall, maintenance garage and storage facilities;
• the significant extension and refurbishment of about 400 000 m2 around the landing strip and airport buildings; and
• several safety-related improvements, such as runway lighting and electrical systems.

The project has been designed to be highly efficient. It will include combined heat and power production.

Value
The project is expected to cost between C$250-million and C$300-million.

Duration
Materials and equipment will be delivered during the 2013 sealift season and construction will begin in 2014.

The project is expected to be completed at the end of 2017.

The project schedule is complex, as it has to take into account the difficult climate conditions and the short window between July and October, during which materials can be delivered, when the sea is not frozen.

Latest Developments
The Arctic Infrastructure Partners consortium, comprising Bouygues Building Canada, a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction, and Sintra, a ColasCanada subsidiary, have been awarded a contract for the improvement of the Iqaluit International Airport.

The public–private partnership will finance, design and construct a new air terminal building, as well as operate and maintain the terminal for 34 years.

The total value of the contract is estimated at C$229-million.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Arctic Infrastructure Partners (construction contract).
