Bateman supplying belt presses for East Rand wastewater plant
Project management and marketing com- pany Bateman Africa, together with its in-house technology partner Tenova Bateman Technologies, is supplying belt press technology to the East Rand Water Care Company (ERWAT) for its Waterval waste- water treatment works, south of Johannesburg.
ERWAT subcontracted Bateman Africa to supply four Bellmer WinklePress belt presses for the treatment of various sludge types at its Waterval treatment works.
The initial project scope required a combin- ation of linear screens and belt presses to treat digested waste-activated sludge, digested primary sludge and a combination of these prior to disposal. Bateman Africa and Bellmer then proposed an innovative alternative solu-tion, where the linear screens’ functionality was replaced by extending the gravity dewater-ing section of the belt presses.
The process equipment design and engi-neering are a collaborative effort between Bateman Africa and Bellmer. The equipment is manufactured, assembled and factory-tested in Germany.
The solution provides a high-feed throughput, good sludge thickening, optimal dewatering, increased dry-solids concentration and optimal filtrate values without the need for upstream screening in the treatment circuit.
The equipment to be supplied for the Waterval installation includes rollers in an optimised configuration, resulting in a higher dry-solids concentration of between 1% and 3% and in a lower flocculant consumption of between 5% and 10%. It also includes high-per- formance roller bearings, with triple sealing; hydraulic belt alignment control and belt tensioning; a unique scraper design; safety precision frames; and high-quality construc-tion materials, which allow for lower mainte-nance costs and increased equipment life.
Bellmer Turbo Drains and WinklePress belt presses have been used successfully in municipal wastewater treatment plants and in the paper and fruit juice industries in Southern Africa for many years.
