In a bid to discover more of South Africa’s innovative talent, the Innovation Summit has launched the second yearly Inventors’ Garage competition.

Any individual, group or team with a new invention, discovery, design, model or prototype in any industry, could enter the online competition to stand a chance of winning the first prize of R15 000 in cash.

Details of the entries would also be uploaded to Facebook and the invention that receives the most likes on the social media site would receive R5 000 in cash.

Last year’s winner, Andrew Kessler, has, since winning the competition, employed four permanent developers and was in discussions with big telecommunications organisations to adopt his HeraldSafe app.

The HeraldSafe app, the name of which had since been changed to EyeQ, was aimed at giving citizens peace of mind by notifying the relevant authorities of a mobile phone users’ last known location, should the mobile phone be inactive for a certain duration.

Entries for the 2014 competition close on August 20.
