JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Platinum major Impala Platinum’s (Implats’) platinum production for the third quarter, ended March 31, increased to 341 000 oz, compared with the 240 000 oz produced in the March 2012 quarter.

Palladium output increased to 220 000 oz for the quarter, compared with the 160 000 oz produced in the third quarter of the previous year, while rhodium output increased to 53 000 oz, up from 40 000 oz in the March 2012 quarter.

Group refined platinum production for the nine months ended March 2013 amounted to 1.21-million ounces, up 12% on the 1.07-million produced in the prior comparative period.

The increase was owing to increased throughput at Impala Refining Services (IRS) as a result of more toll treatment business.

Platinum production at IRS increased by 27% to 649 000 oz for the nine-month period, compared with 510 000 oz in the nine months ended March 2012, as a result of an increase in one-off tolling treatment receipts, Implats stated.

This also resulted in higher palladium and rhodium output for the nine-month period.
