IFP applauds matric pass rate, questions quantity over quality

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) on Wednesday congratulated the matric class of 2019 on their historic pass rate, saying the country had every reason to celebrate these results at face value.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced that the class of 2019 achieved a pass rate of 81.3%, up from 78.2% in 2018, breaching the 80% threshold for the first time.

However, IFP spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa said that qualitatively, the country still had a long way to go.

“The inequality on the quintile grading of schools has been reinforced by these results. Schools that are previously disadvantaged and locked in quintiles 1, 2 and 3 continue to lag behind when it comes to quality passes and only registering increases in the quantity output,” said Hlengwa.

He added that the class of 2019 was faced with poor planning and under-resourcing of higher education infrastructure, especially TVET colleges, which he said were in disarray.

“Therefore the 2019 matric results must be taken with a pinch of salt when the future is taken into account because the biggest question becomes ‘what next?’ when you have a higher education system that is ill equipped for these results. Universities and universities of technology do not have space as characterised by poor planning in this regard,” he said.

He went on to question whether the matric results would be an effective response to job market needs or whether it would even meet the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

“Whilst we celebrate these results as a country we must avoid churning out quantity over quality if we are to meaningfully push back the frontiers of poverty and inequality,” he said.
