The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said on Friday that it supported the decision made by its CEO Sy Mamabolo to reject ActionSA’s appeal to be registered as a political party.

The IEC said if the party was still aggrieved by the decision, it may approach the Electoral Court.

The IEC said it had rejected ActionSA’s application owing to logo similarities with another political party and its use of the South African flag in its logo.

“Having duly considered the appeal lodged by ActionSA, as well as the grounds for the rejection of the party’s application by the CEO, the Commission upheld the CEO’s decision on the basis that the symbol of the party resembles that of another registered party to such an extent that it may deceive or confuse voters,” the IEC said in a statement.

The Commission explained that ActionSA may submit a new application for registration with a revised symbol or logo.

The IEC has written to ActionSA outlining its decision and responding in full to their appeal.
