The council of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has appointed Advocate Nkhetheleni Norman Gidi as acting CEO, from September 1 to November 30, until a permanent appointment is made.

This followed the end of the term of office and resignation of outgoing CEO Willington Ngwepe, whose last day in office is August 31.

Gidi, an admitted advocate of the High Court since 2009, brings a wealth of Icasa-specific knowledge and experience to the acting role, having been with the authority since August 2009 as a senior manager for licensing.

In this role, he was instrumental in the management of the licensing of broadcasting, ECS/ECNS and postal services.

Gidi, has held several positions at the authority including licensing GM; legal, risk and complaints and compliance committee executive and, more recently, policy research and analysis executive.

He holds a Master of Laws degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and has completed various leadership programmes, including the Spider Capacity Building on information and communication technology regulation, Policy and Practice (Stockholm University) and the Leaders in Development Programme (Harvard Kennedy School).
