Name of the Project
Hydrilyte refueller prototype project.

Location
Holyhead, in North Wales, in the UK.

Project Owner/s
The project is being developed by a consortium comprising Corre Energy (prime contractor and project administrator); Carbon280 (Hydrilyte technology developer); Worley (engineering, procurement and construction management); Element 2 (hydrogen refueller); Menter Môn (Holyhead site for the refueller prototype); and Energy Reform (energy systems modelling).

Project Description
The project will demonstrate the benefits of grid-flexible electricity demand – the ability to turn on hydrogen production when power generated by renewables exceeds load and turn it off when load exceeds generation; and the ability to safely and economically store, transport and deliver hydrogen to refuelling stations.

The project will be developed in two phases.

In the first phase, the consortium will aim to demonstrate a unique long-duration hydrogen storage system using Hydrilyte – a method of storing and transporting hydrogen.

Hydrilyte stores hydrogen by bonding it to a metal dust suspended in a liquid, which can be safely and cost effectively stored and transported.

Subject to feasibility, the supply model for Hydrilyte will mirror the existing fossil fuel diesel market, using centralised hydrogen production hubs and conventional road tanker distribution to fuel stations.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
The project was awarded about £150 000 in funding through the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio Longer Duration Energy Storage Demonstration programme in February 2022.

Planned Start/End Date
If successful, the prototype will be built between 2022 and 2024.
