The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) discovered over 200 tonnes of gold concentrate stashed inside a granite factory in Potchefstroom, North West.

“The discovery was made during a disruptive operation which was undertaken on Monday. Although no one has been arrested as yet, two known suspects are believed to be behind this illicit trade and the Hawks are pursuing them,” spokeperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said in a statement released on Tuesday night.

“The origin of the concentrate is also known but cannot be revealed due to the sensitivity of the investigation.”

He said the value of the gold concentrate had not yet been determined but it was suspected to be worth millions of rands.

Acting Hawks head Major General Mthandazo Ntlemeza hailed the operation as another breakthrough into illegal mining syndicates.

“Whilst the investigation is still ongoing, we are continuously making serious inroads to unearth more syndicates especially the kingpins who benefit out of the proceeds of illicit activities,” said Ntlemeza.

No stone will be left unturned in the relentless efforts to protect our country’s economy, said Ntlemeza.
