Name of the Project
Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant project.

Location
The project is located in Pyhäjoki, in northern Finland.

Project Owner/s
Fennovoima Oy, in which a 34% stake is held by RAOS Voima Oy, a subsidiary of Rosatom.

Project Description
Hanhikivi 1 will be a third-generation evolutionary pressurised water-reactor, based on Russian water-water energetic reactor (WWER) plants.

The plant will be able to produce about 1 200 MW of electric power and 3 200 MW of thermal power. The operation will include horizontal steam generators that are typical for WWER plants.

The operational lifetime of the plant is 60 years.

Potential Job Creation
At the end of 2019, an average of 230 people were working on site.

Capital Expenditure
The project is estimated at between €6.5-billion and €7-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
The first phase of construction, which will take about three years, will encompass the construction of the infrastructure and performance of civil engineering work.

The actual power plant construction, including installation work undertaken at the plant, will take five to six years. Work will begin once the infrastructure and civil engineering works have been completed.

Fennovoima began excavation work at the Hanhikivi site in January 2016. It had expected to receive the construction licence for Hanhikivi 1 in 2018, with operation beginning in 2024. However, in September 2017, the company announced it did not expect to receive the licence until 2019, as the review of documentation pertaining to its application was taking longer than originally envisaged.

In December 2018, Fennovoima said it now expected to receive the construction licence in 2021.
