Name of the Project
H2-Hub Gladstone project.

Location
Yarwun, near Gladstone, in Queensland, Australia.

Project Owner/s
H2U Group and Orica announced a strategic partnership agreement to initiate the first phase of the proposed H2-Hub Gladstone project in April 2022. Both parties will explore opportunities for an exclusive domestic green ammonia offtake and supply agreement. The potential agreement will result in green ammonia being supplied directly to Orica’s Yarwun manufacturing plant from H2U’s proposed Yarwun green ammonia production plant.

Orica and H2U will also collaborate on the exploration of a potential green ammonia export terminal at the Port of Gladstone, leveraging the existing Orica ammonia storage capacity at the Fisherman’s Landing Wharf and the associated connecting infrastructure in the Gladstone State Development Area to facilitate large scale exports.

Project Description
The proposed H2-Hub is an industrial-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production complex – integrating up to eight industrial-scale process trains – with a planned capacity of up to 3 GW of electrolysis and up to 5 000 t/d of green ammonia production.

It is expected that the proposed facility will use 100% renewable energy from new-build solar and wind resources in the Queensland region of the National Electricity Market. The facility could also contribute to improving the reliability of renewable electricity supply, with the integration of new renewable generation assets in central Queensland.

Potential Job Creation
The project has the potential to create more than 550 jobs during construction, more than 140 ongoing local operational jobs and about 1 900 indirect jobs.

Capital Expenditure
A$4.7-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Subject to approvals, H2U proposes to begin Stage 1 construction in 2023, with production starting towards the end of 2025.

Latest Developments
The Queensland government has called for public comment on the H2-Hub Gladstone proposal to develop a green hydrogen and green ammonia production and export facility.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
None stated.
