Group Five Coastal has started construction on the Stafford’s Post interchange on the N2 highway between Kokstad and Harding, the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has reported.

The construction project, worth some R129.7-million and due for completion in December 2014, would involve the upgrading of the existing T-junction of the N2 and R56 roads, as well as the realignment and widening of both roads and the construction of a new road-over-road bridge.

New side-drainage channels, inlets, outlets and associated erosion protection works would be completed in conjunction with the construction of a new curb, channels and pipe culverts.

Road furniture would be upgraded and the road reserve fenced, while new lay-bys, walkway facilities and access roads would be constructed.

Sanral told Engineering News that, owing to the steep and rolling topography in the area, a narrow diamond-type interchange had been deemed the most appropriate configuration.

“As a result, motorists on the N2 will enjoy an uninterrupted right of way through the interchange, while motorists on the R56 – the secondary road – will be directed along a realigned road-over-road . . . bridge at a 30° angle to the N2,” the roads agency said.

Motorists were advised to be cautious when driving through the construction work zones, where the speed limit would be reduced to 60 km/h during the construction phase.
