Name of the Project
Green Energy Manufacturing (GEM) Centre.

Location
In Gladstone, Queensland, Australia.

Project Owner/s
The project is a 50:50 joint venture between Fortescue and Plug Power Inc.

Project Description
The project entails the construction of the world’s biggest electrolyser facility – one of the first worldwide to house an automated assembly line.

The GEM Centre will be powered by green energy. The 15 000 m2 advanced manufacturing facility will have capacity to produce more than 2GW/y of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser stacks.

Additional phases will include a hydrogen system testing facility and Fortescue’s PEM50 green hydrogen project – a 50 MW green hydrogen production facility.

PEM50 will use the locally made PEM electrolysers to produce green hydrogen for local and export markets. Once operational, it will be the first commercial-scale green hydrogen facility for Fortescue.

Potential Job Creation
More than 100 jobs were created during the construction process, with the facility and wider centre to ultimately underpin over 300 direct and indirect jobs.

Capital Expenditure
The Stage 1 electrolyser facility is estimated at A$114-million.

Planned Start/End Date
The manufacturing facility was built and fully commissioned in just over two years.

Latest Developments.
The facility was officially opened on April 8, 2024.
