Name of the Project
Green Energy Manufacturing (GEM) Centre.

Location
In Gladstone, Queensland, Australia.

Project Owner/s
The project is a 50:50 joint venture (subject to approvals) between Fortescue Future Industries (FFI), a subsidiary of Fortescue Metals Group (FMG), and Plug Power Inc.

Project Description
The project entails the construction of the world’s biggest electrolyser facility. The GEM Centre will be powered by green energy.

The facility will have an initial capacity of 2 GW/y – more than double that of current global production – and enough to produce more than 200 000 t/y of green hydrogen.

FFI is targeting the production of 15-million tonnes of green hydrogen a year by 2030 – the equivalent of removing 60-million diesel fuel cars off the road this decade.

Potential Job Creation
The GEM will create more than 100 jobs during the construction phase, up to 50 permanent jobs and several hundred indirect jobs that will support the local supply chain.

Capital Expenditure
The Stage 1 electrolyser facility is estimated at A$114-million.

Planned Start/End Date
Construction started in February 2022.

The first electrolysers are expected to be manufactured at the facility in early 2023.
